My advice: head to the Apple Store or any authorized Apple repair shop. If you have a broken fan, you need to replace it.

Your Mac will test your hardware, and let you know if your fan is broken. Turn your computer off, then hold the “D” key while turning it on. Think your fan might be broken? The first thing you should do is launch Apple Diagnostics, one of the hidden startup options on your Mac. But for the occasional test, it’s nice to have control-just turn things back to automatic when you’re done. I really do not recommend disabling the automatic fan control: leaving your fans on constantly will wear them out and waste energy, and leaving them off will overheat your Mac over time. Turn the fan up and see if you can hear anything. To find out if your fans are working at all, you can click the “Custom” speed button.

The same goes if you see a low CPU temperature-say, around 45-and the fans are running at full speed. If you see high CPU temperatures-say, over 80 or 90 degrees-and that the fans aren’t running, you might have an issue. The minimum, current, and maximum speed are shown in that order. Here is a selection:įor more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software. For the most part, however, we’re interested in your fan’s current speed. If you cannot find the uninstaller then you could download the freeware, Easy Find, to locate files that need to be removed. Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. If you want you can look for them at the above location and delete them, too. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Maybe I should reinstall my OS w/my DVD because maybe Fan Control will then work, allowing me to configure it properly prior to uninstalling. I reinstalled my OS to my internal HD w/the DVD I bought from Apple but the result was buggy so I used my cousin's DVD, which seems slightly older because its iTunes is slightly older. And Automator wont auto-play an iTunes radio station when my computer auto-awakens in morning, as it did w/the external HD. But I cant import Firefox bookmarks from the external HD or my backup external ,LaCie HD. But, very recently, I reinstalled my OS on my internal HD. A techie (w/some connection to Apple) said my internal HD was permanently dead. I installed Fan Control after internal HD failed 6 months ago and I started using an external, Maxstor HD. This may confuse looking for Fan Control parts to uninstall. I have 3 libraries, system, user, and another. I must, I believe, have proper rpm before uninstalling. Also: all four current temps are 28F or 32F. But, CPU fan is 4650, HD fan is -107 (minus?!) and DVD fan is -107 (minus?! and when not used!). I'm unsure if I need even a properly working Fan Control. How can I uninstall Fan Control (not SMC Fan Control)? It wont respond to its controls.
